‘The Whale’ Wins Gold in Women’s Underwater Sumo Wrestling

by Skip DeKades

Bismarck, N.D., August 13, 2028 — U.S. heavyweight Wanda “the Whale” Spawten broke her own world record yesterday in the women’s underwater sumo wrestling final against Chinese rival Miso Fat.

It took Spawten just 10 seconds to knock Fat off balance and onto the pool floor.  She set her previous record at the 2020 games in Moscow, when she defeated Russian champion Olga Gorgechov.

The win marks Spawten’s third Olympic gold medal; she also earned the top spot on the podium in the 2024 games.

Spawten’s Bismarck glory isn’t over yet. She’ll join teammate Wade Masse on Thursday in preliminary mixed doubles competition against Germany.

Underwater sumo wrestling, created in the United States and first introduced at the 2020 games, is considered one of the most challenging Olympic sports.  The rules dictate that competitors can only come up for air every 20 minutes, unless they win their match first.  Spectators are typically advised to wear impermeable clothing because of the massive amounts of water displaced from the pool during each match.
