July 16, 2029—Public interest groups are demanding that the federal government release technology that will enable Americans to download their psyches to portable electronic devices before the world comes to an end.
Advocates are calling on President Angelina Jolie to permit the commercialization of soul-transfer technology, which heretofore has been limited to military and intelligence purposes. With a destructive asteroid heading toward Earth, Jolie is facing mounting pressure to find the most efficient way of rescuing billions of souls from annihilation.
“With this planet on the verge of becoming inhabitable, people need options; they should be able to download their spirits to electronic devices and transfer them to spare bodies that may become available offworld,” said Bree N. Dumpp, President of the Mindless Bodies Association (MBA). “Soul storage may be the only way for people to preserve themselves, since the government isn’t able to transport actual bodies off the planet fast enough.”
Soul-transfer technology has typically been used in intelligence operations, allowing spies, for example, to transfer their minds to other bodies as a means of disguise. Typically, the agents’ psyches are uploaded to the brains of bodies that are recently deceased.
Central Intelligence Agency Director Chad Owey said he is uncomfortable allowing the technology to be released to the mass market, warning that it could allow wanted criminals and terrorists to abuse it.
“A known terrorist could simply hide out by transferring his or her consciousness to a cellphone or portable computer,” Owey said.
FU technology analyst Mae Gabitt warns the commercial use of soul transfers could also prove dangerous to consumers.
“Say you decide to store your mind on a portable device,” Gabitt said. “What happens if that device breaks? Your essence may be irretrievable.
“And there are practical considerations, too,” she continued. “If people are transferring their minds elsewhere, what do you do with all the emptied bodies? Put them all on ice?”
